As we observe World Environment Day today June 5, 2025, the theme “United Against Plastic Pollution” highlights a critical issue that affects not only our environment but also our health and livelihoods. In Uganda, the impact of plastic pollution is becoming increasingly evident, threatening our rich biodiversity and the well-being of our communities. This year’s theme serves as a rallying cry for collective action, urging individuals, organizations, and governments to come together in the fight against plastic waste.
Uganda, with its diverse ecosystems, including lakes, rivers, and national parks, is facing a growing plastic pollution crisis. The country generates approximately 600,000 tons of plastic waste each year, with only a small percentage being recycled. The majority ends up in landfills, water bodies, and natural habitats, leading to severe environmental degradation. This pollution not only harms wildlife but also poses serious health risks to communities, particularly those living near polluted areas.
In urban centers like Kampala, the challenge is exacerbated by inadequate waste management systems. With only about 45% of waste collected and managed properly, plastic waste often clogs drainage systems, leading to flooding and creating breeding grounds for disease-carrying pests. The need for urgent action has never been more pressing.
In response to the plastic pollution crisis, the Coterie Development Initiative (CDI) is dedicated to taking meaningful action to combat this issue in Uganda. Our mission is to empower communities through sustainable practices while fostering environmental stewardship. As we celebrate World Environment Day, we are excited to share our initiatives aimed at addressing plastic pollution.
- CDI believes that education is key to changing behaviors related to plastic consumption and waste management.
- To tackle the growing problem of plastic waste, CDI implements community-based plastic collection and recycling programs.
- CDI is committed to promoting sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics,
- Engaging local residents in clean-up efforts will empower them to take ownership of their environment and advocate for cleaner communities.
- CDI recognizes the importance of policy advocacy in addressing plastic pollution. We will engage with local and national policymakers to promote legislation that supports waste reduction, encourages recycling, and discourages the use of single-use plastics. By advocating for stronger policies, we aim to create a supportive framework for sustainable practices in Uganda.
As we commemorate World Environment Day 2025 under the theme “United Against Plastic Pollution,” let us come together as a nation to confront this pressing challenge. The fight against plastic pollution requires collective action, and every individual has a role to play.
Coterie Development Initiative invites all Ugandans to join us in our mission to protect our environment and promote sustainable practices. Together, we can create a cleaner, healthier Uganda for ourselves and future generations. Let us unite against plastic pollution and take decisive action today—because our planet deserves a sustainable future.
